After more than a year in development, Microsoft's System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 has been released to manufacturing. Along with the recent release of Hyper-V, the arrival of VMM 2008 completes Microsoft's near-term virtualization strategy. VMware is undoubtedly ahead when it comes to a point-by-point comparison of virtualization features: Many of the IT pros we spoke with at VMworld 2008 pointed to the lack of a Microsoft equivalent to VMware's VMotion functionality-which allows virtual machines to be easily moved without stopping them-as a deal-breaker for them. Microsoft has indicated that similar functionality will arrive with the release of Windows Server 2008 R2, which is slated for a late 2009 or 2010 release.

Microsoft voegt Hyper-V toe aan Vista

Vista gaat uitgebreid worden met Hyper-V. Dat meldt Microsoft-ceo Steve Ballmer. Daarnaast gaan er geruchten dat Microsoft Hyper-V meer gaat integreren binnen Windows Server 2008.
Microsoft-ceo Steve Ballmer kondigde vorige week tijdens een Gartnersymposium aan dat Microsoft niet wacht met het integreren van virtualisatie in het besturingssyteem totdat Windows 7 wordt uitgebracht: "Je hoeft niet het hele besturingsysteem te herschrijven om desktopvirtualisatie toe te voegen. Het desktopoptimalisatiepakket dat we begin volgend jaar uitbrengen, gaat technologie bevatten waarmee je op de client een hypervisor of virtuele machines kunt draaien."

Integratie met Windows Server 2008
Daarnaast zijn er geruchten dat Microsoft Hyper-V meer gaat integreren binnen Windows Server 2008 SP2. Dit meldt Microsoft-watcher Mary Jo Foley. Virtualisatiepakket Hyper-V vormt al onderdeel van Windows Server 2008, maar draait nu nog bovenop het besturingssysteem. Die serveruitvoering van Windows is nu ook verkrijgbaar zonder Hyper-V, maar deze uitvoering valt niet zomaar uit te breiden met het virtualisatiepakket.
